When you are grieving, an unexpected laugh or an enjoyable conversation can feel complicated. You might find yourself wondering whether you should be feeling it at all.
Grief can involve many different feelings. There isn’t a timetable that tells you what you should feel today, and a difficult day does not erase an easier one.
A moment does not need to mean more
You could enjoy a song, notice the warmth of a cup in your hands or appreciate someone’s company. You do not have to turn that moment into evidence that you are better. It can simply be a moment.
Equally, you do not have to go looking for something good when you are exhausted or hurting. There is no task to complete here.
A gentle question: Is there anything that would feel comforting today, even briefly?
Make room for your own experience
Comfort might be quiet company, talking about the person you miss or having an ordinary conversation about something else. What feels right may change from one day to the next.
If you would like support with your grief, you can talk to someone you trust, your GP or a counsellor. You don’t need to wait until you have the words neatly arranged.
